Alibaba plans AI model with 5–10 trillion parameters
Alibaba unveiled an infrastructure roadmap spanning a new giant AI model, the Zhenwu V900 chip and more than 20 GW of global cloud capacity.
Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu said on September 22 that the company plans to train a new AI model with 5 trillion to 10 trillion parameters. The company also unveiled the Zhenwu V900 chip.
The model is still a plan
The 5–10 trillion parameter figure is not the size of a finished, publicly released model. It is a training plan announced by Alibaba’s chief executive; the model’s name, launch date, cost and independent benchmark results were not disclosed.
Parameter count is not the only measure of a model’s capability. Data quality, architecture, training method and operating cost also affect real-world performance.
Zhenwu V900 and data centres
Alibaba described Zhenwu V900 as China’s most powerful AI chip and said it delivers three times the performance of its predecessor. This is the company’s own claim; detailed independent test results were not provided.
Alibaba Cloud aims to increase its global data-centre capacity to more than 20 GW by 2032. This is a long-term target, not capacity that has already been built.
