Nuance Labs raises $50 million for AI that understands emotions
Founded by former Apple researchers, the startup aims to process real-time audio and video in a single model.
Seattle-based Nuance Labs announced a $50 million Series A round on September 14, 2026. Lightspeed Venture Partners led the round, joined by Accel, NVentures, South Park Commons and Define Ventures.
Voice and vision in one model
Nuance Labs is building an audiovisual model that understands face-to-face conversations in real time. Its goal is to account not only for spoken words but also for signals such as tone, facial expressions, gaze and pauses.
The company aims to combine the separate stages found in many current avatar systems — speech transcription, response writing, voice generation and facial animation — into one system. The product has not yet launched as a public commercial service.
Team and plans
Fangchang Ma, Edward Zhang and Karren Yang founded the startup. All three previously worked in research or engineering at Apple.
The new funding will support expansion of the research team and work to bring the product to market. The company plans to present a public research demonstration of its model by the end of 2026; this is a plan, not a guaranteed launch date.
