Spirit AI expects a 2027 turning point for robot ‘brains’
China’s Spirit AI is testing Moz1 robots in factories; the 2027 claim is a founder’s forecast, not a verified outcome.
Spirit AI co-founder and chief scientist Gao Yang said he expects AI systems controlling robots to reach an important turning point in 2027. Reuters reported on September 18 about the company’s factory trials, funding and technical limits.
Moz1 is being tested in factories
According to Reuters, the 300-person Spirit AI was founded in 2024 and has raised more than $670 million. The company has been valued at 20 billion yuan, or about $2.9 billion.
Dozens of wheeled Moz1 humanoid robots have been deployed on production lines at CATL and JD.com. This is not proof of full autonomy at commercial scale, but a stage of practical testing in industrial environments.
Results and limitations
The company reported a success rate of about 90% on simple tasks in a structured living-room environment. That result is based on Spirit AI’s statement and should not be generalized to every real-world setting.
Gao Yang described the next one to two years as an initial opportunity window for industrial applications, while acknowledging that home use is more difficult. Fine motor control and previously unseen tasks remain major technical obstacles.
2027 is a forecast
The “2027 turning point” is not an independently verified deadline; it is the co-founder’s forecast. Spirit AI said it is working with about 1,000 contractors to collect real-world data.
